Email to 1998 from Richard

FROM: Richard

SUBJECT: message to 1998 me

Dear Richard,

Life sucks! You're in high-school and your middle-school friends are picking on you to score points with cooler kids. This goes on for a while. It's what kids do, try not to hate them. You probably would've done the same thing if positions were reversed. Sadly, your confidence is going to take a mighty hit. Your self-esteem will plummet. You will become painfully shy. You wont trust or open yourself up to anybody for about 6 - 7 years. You miss out on a mighty lot of teenage rebellion.

But you were right, it does get better. All those things you wanted to do in your life, you'll start doing them once you leave other people's expectations behind. First, you'll go to University and reinvent yourself. You'll have an amazing time. You'll catch up on social skills. You'll discover women. You'll graduate top of your class (nerd!).

Then you'll ignore 3 good job offers and and go into business for yourself. You'll work with amazing, world-famous, companies that respect your particular brand of expertise. You'll live in 4 separate countries in the space of 3 years. In 2010, you'll take the bold leap of starting your own business.

And you'll become engaged. Be nice to her from the beginning. She really likes you. Don't act coy. You're not a player, you're a nice guy. Do this and you wont have to grovel to get her back.

Cheer up. Don't sweat the unimportant stuff. Look for experiences to enjoy, not experiences to avoid. You're (probably) going to have an awesome life.

- Rich
