Email to 1998 from Zoë

SUBJECT: Me in 1998

You're 11-years-old. You've been living in Slough for three years and yes, it stinks. You're going to go through a lot of crap in the next 12 years and some of it's going to be entirely beyond your control so please try to remember that everything gets better eventually. However, there are a few things that you should try to remember which should hopefully make things a little easier for yourself.

1) Don't spend all your money on useless crap - like drugs in about five years' time when you go to college, and clothes you're only going to wear once and leave to rot in the back of your wardrobe - because you're really going to need it when times get tough. And they will.

2) Your mother and father are good people despite the amount they drink and the fights they get into, they will sort themselves out in a few years so try not to stress yourself about it. Don't be angry with them for not having another child or living in a crappy area, they did what they had to do to survive and you'll thank them for it one day.

3) Don't go out with people with names beginning with M, C, S, or A, they will only cause you unnecessary trouble.

4) Try to keep hold of your childhood as much as you can, but when Big, Important, Unavoidable Things happen don't live so much in the past. Learning to let things go after decent closure will do you good in the long run.

5) Don't eat so much chocolate. I know it tastes nice, but honestly you'll thank me for this later. Also, exercise can be fun, so can extra-curricular activities. Don't give up on them just because you don't see results straight away, everything takes time.

And finally, always listen to your first instincts and always be yourself. Always. No matter what the idiots who think they know more than you say, you're going to do just fine being exactly who you are. Promise.
